History
Our story
Spanning nearly two centuries, our story is one of evolution, innovation, and a deep connection to the people and communities we serve.
We began in 1837, when the Colonial Bank opened in Kingston to support trade in a growing Jamaica. Over time, that early operation became Barclays Bank, and in 1977, National Commercial Bank Jamaica Limited. In 2016, NCB Financial Group Limited was established as the holding company, creating the structure that supports our regional reach today.
The people’s bank
We have always been closely tied to the lives of Jamaicans. That is where the idea of NCB as the People’s Bank comes from. Not as a slogan, but from the role we have played in helping individuals, businesses and communities move forward over time.
As the country changed, so did the way people needed to manage their money. NCB responded by introducing innovations that made everyday banking more accessible and more practical. In 1981, we launched the Keycard, Jamaica’s first locally developed credit card, giving more people the ability to move away from cash. We expanded electronic payments across the island, introduced point-of-sale systems, and built out one of the largest ABM networks, including early drive-thru locations that made banking simpler to access.

Driving Innovation
Today, that same thinking continues, just in a more digital form. Platforms like Lynk allow customers to send, receive and manage money directly from their phones, including through Jamaica’s central bank digital currency, JAM-DEX. Digital lending has also made it easier for individuals and businesses to access credit, without the delays and barriers that once came with it.
Across each stage, we have stayed close to how people live and what they need, with a consistent focus on making financial services easier to access and easier to use. That is what building a better Jamaica has meant in practice. It continues to shape how we grow, how we serve, and how we show up.
We remain rooted in Jamaica, while operating as part of a wider Caribbean financial group, continuing to support growth, inclusion and opportunity.
